Born in London in 1889, Charlie Chaplin's parents were both music hall entertainers: Charles Chaplin Sr. and Hannah Chaplin (née Hill). His parents separated when he was very young, and he also had two half-brothers, Sydney Chaplin (from his mother's previous relationship) and Wheeler Dryden (from his mother's relationship after separating from his father).

Chaplin was married four times. His first marriage to Mildred Harris was short-lived and they had one son who sadly died in infancy. His second marriage to Lita Grey resulted in two sons, Charles Chaplin Jr. and Sydney Chaplin. His third wife was Paulette Goddard, an actress who appeared in some of his films, but they had no children.

His final and longest marriage was to Oona O'Neill, daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill. Despite a significant age difference, their marriage was a happy one and they had a large family of eight children: Geraldine, Michael, Josephine, Victoria, Eugene, Jane, Annette, and Christopher.
